Contexte historique et thème

The M113 entered U.S. service in 1960 as a lightweight, fully tracked armored personnel carrier designed to transport infantry across difficult terrain. In 1964, the gasoline engine of the original M113 was replaced by a 212 hp General Motors 6V53 diesel engine, creating the M113A1. The diesel-powered version became one of the most important armored vehicles used by American, Australian and South Vietnamese forces during the Vietnam War.

Combat experience in Vietnam quickly changed how the vehicle was used. Crews were vulnerable while operating the roof-mounted machine gun, leading South Vietnamese and later U.S. forces to add protective shields and additional weapons. The resulting Armored Cavalry Assault Vehicle, or ACAV, typically combined the commander’s M2 .50-caliber machine gun with protective armor and two additional M60 7.62 mm machine guns with shields. These modifications allowed M113s to fight more aggressively from the vehicle rather than acting only as troop transports.

The main hatches and rear ramp can be assembled open or closed, and the front trim vane can be displayed either deployed or folded. Clear parts reproduce transparent components, while photo-etched parts add finer details. The running gear uses link-and-length tracks, providing defined track detail while avoiding the need to assemble every link individually. One figure and decals covering five marking options are also supplied.

The M113A1 is particularly suited to Vietnam War dioramas. A standard APC can be shown transporting troops, moving along a muddy track, crossing wet ground or operating around a temporary base.

The ACAV configuration is ideal for armored cavalry patrols, convoy escort scenes, reconnaissance missions and vehicle columns moving through jungle or rural terrain. Period experience also saw M113 crews adding personal gear and field stowage to their vehicles, giving modelers extensive possibilities for creating an individual operational appearance.

The broad surfaces of the M113A1 provide excellent opportunities for fading, dust, mud, scratches and operational wear. Vietnam vehicles can be further personalized with suitable stowage, tarpaulins, packs and crew equipment based on period references.
