Description

AK Interactive 11633 – WWII French Uniform Colors Set is a dedicated 3Gen acrylic paint selection designed for French Army figures from the First and Second World Wars. The set contains six complementary 18 ml colors covering green and khaki uniform tones, canvas equipment and brown leather. Rather than relying on a single generic “French khaki,” AK11633 provides several related shades that allow clothing, equipment and leather garments to be differentiated naturally. AK Interactive confirms the six-color composition and recommends the set for French Army figures operating in different theaters during WWI and WWII.

Historical Context & Theme

French military clothing of the late 1930s and 1940 campaign showed considerable variation. Khaki had replaced the horizon-blue field uniform as the principal color, but differences in manufacture, material, wear and the continued use of older equipment meant that French soldiers did not present a perfectly uniform appearance.

A contemporary 1939 German recognition chart describing French Army uniforms specifically records khaki field uniforms while noting shortages and the continued appearance of older clothing in some formations. It also distinguishes brown leather clothing used by armored and mechanized personnel.

This variation makes a multi-tone palette particularly useful when painting French figures. Greenish khaki, field drab, ochre-khaki and canvas shades can be combined to represent different garments and equipment without making an entire figure appear as a single flat color.

Figure / Vehicle Details & Realism

AK11633 provides six colors selected around three useful painting areas. AK11427 Green Uniform Base and AK11436 Uniform Light (Canvas Tone) form a strong combination for greenish field clothing and lighter textile highlights.

AK11435 Field Drab and AK11422 Ocher Khaki provide warmer alternatives for khaki garments, faded fabrics and tonal variation between different items of clothing or equipment.

The final pair, AK11111 Dark Brown Leather (Burnt Umber) and AK11120 Leather Scuffs (Mud Brown), is intended for brown leather surfaces and worn highlights. These tones are useful for belts, pouches, boots and appropriate leather garments or accessories.

The exact six-color selection is confirmed by AK Interactive.

Diorama & Display Use

AK11633 is particularly suited to French Army figures from the 1939–1940 campaign, including infantry, artillery crews, vehicle crews and other personnel represented during the Battle of France.

The different khaki and green shades make the set useful for groups of several figures, where subtle variations can prevent every uniform from looking identical. This is especially effective in 1/35 dioramas containing French tanks, artillery pieces, trucks or motorcycles.

The palette can also support earlier French military subjects, as AK Interactive explicitly recommends the selection for both WWI and WWII French Army uniforms. Individual colors can therefore be incorporated into a broader historical palette when supported by references for the exact unit and period being modeled.

Material & Customization

AK11633 contains six paints from AK Interactive’s 3Gen acrylic range, each supplied in an 18 ml bottle. The paints are intended for figure and military modeling and can be used individually or mixed together to create intermediate shades.

Green Uniform Base, Field Drab and Ocher Khaki provide useful starting colors, while Canvas Tone can create lighter textile variation. Dark Brown Leather and Leather Scuffs allow leather equipment to be separated visually from the surrounding uniform.

The colors can be layered to build highlights and shadows, mixed to reproduce faded fabric, or adjusted according to scale, lighting and the condition of the figure being painted.

Who It’s For

AK11633 is designed for historical figure painters, French Army modelers, Battle of France enthusiasts and diorama builders looking for a coordinated palette for French military clothing and equipment.

It is particularly useful for painters who want several compatible French uniform tones in one set rather than selecting individual colors separately.
