Description

Takom 8019 – 1/35 Panzer IV Ausf. H Early Production Sd.Kfz.161/2 is a newly tooled plastic model kit representing an early-production example of one of the most numerous and important versions of the Panzer IV. Part of Takom’s Blitz series, the kit combines streamlined assembly with numerous configuration choices, including selectable hatches, frontal armor details, muzzle brakes, smoke grenade launchers and Schürzen arrangements. An aluminium 7.5 cm gun barrel, photo-etched parts, clear components and link-and-length tracks are included, together with decals for four marking options.

Historical Context & Theme

The Panzerkampfwagen IV began the Second World War as a medium support tank armed with a short-barrelled 75 mm gun, but continuous development transformed it into one of Germany’s principal armored fighting vehicles. The major increase in combat capability came with the introduction of the long-barrelled 7.5 cm KwK 40 family, giving later Panzer IV variants considerably greater anti-tank performance.

Production of the Ausf. H began in 1943. It carried the long 7.5 cm KwK 40 L/48 gun and increased frontal protection, while Schürzen armor screens became an important feature around the hull sides and turret. Early-production Ausf. H vehicles retained several details inherited from previous Panzer IV production, including rubber-tyred return rollers and earlier-style components that were progressively changed as manufacturing continued.

Factory application of Zimmerit did not begin until later in 1943, making the clean armor surfaces represented by an early-production vehicle appropriate for earlier Ausf. H subjects.

Figure / Vehicle Details & Realism

Takom 8019 reproduces characteristics associated with the early Ausf. H, including rubber-tyred return rollers, an early-pattern idler and the absence of the later external air-filter arrangement. The kit provides multiple frontal armor configurations and several muzzle-brake choices, allowing specific details to be matched to the selected marking option or period reference.

All main hatches can be displayed open or closed. The commander’s cupola vision features can also be modeled in alternative positions, while engine-deck ventilation elements offer open or closed options.

The Schürzen side armor can be arranged in different configurations, and Takom also provides alternative positions for spare track links, spare-wheel equipment and towing-cable fittings. The running gear uses link-and-length tracks, combining individual links around curved areas with longer sections for easier assembly. An aluminium gun barrel, photo-etched components and clear parts further refine the finished model.

Diorama & Display Use

The early Panzer IV Ausf. H is particularly suited to German armored scenes from 1943. Eastern Front settings are especially appropriate, including summer operations where Panzer IVs formed an important part of German armored strength. At Kursk in July 1943, Panzer III and Panzer IV vehicles represented the bulk of German tank strength, with the improved 75 mm-armed Panzer IV remaining an important battlefield vehicle.

The model can be displayed on a dusty summer road, in a field position, alongside supporting infantry or as part of a larger armored formation. Different Schürzen arrangements and open hatches provide additional opportunities to personalize the vehicle while remaining consistent with period photography.

Material & Customization

Takom 8019 is an unassembled and unpainted 1/35 injection-molded plastic model kit. Photo-etched details, clear parts and an aluminium gun barrel are included, together with four decal marking options. Glue and paint are required separately.

Its large armor surfaces are well suited to modulation, fading, dust, mud, restrained chipping and operational wear. Early-production subjects also offer the opportunity to reproduce a Panzer IV before the widespread factory application of Zimmerit.

Who It’s For

Takom 8019 is suited to WWII armor modelers, Panzer IV enthusiasts, Eastern Front builders and diorama creators looking for an early Ausf. H with modern tooling and several configuration options.
