Tamiya 35394 – 1/35 German Tractor RSO/01 – TAM35394 is a newly tooled plastic model kit of the distinctive Raupenschlepper Ost developed for difficult terrain during World War II. Tamiya depicts a later RSO/01 production vehicle from spring 1943, combining the characteristic rounded pressed-steel cab with its compact fully tracked chassis and practical rear cargo platform. The finished model measures 126 mm long and 64 mm wide and includes a driver figure, two marking options and pre-cut masking stickers for the windows and frames.
Historical Context & Theme
The Raupenschlepper Ost, usually abbreviated RSO, was developed after German forces encountered severe mobility problems in the mud, snow and poor road conditions of the Eastern Front. Unlike conventional trucks and half-tracks, the RSO used a simple fully tracked running system intended to maintain mobility in demanding terrain.
The RSO/01 entered production in 1942 and was distinguished by its rounded pressed-steel cab. From spring 1943, production vehicles received modifications including a slightly raised cab floor to improve clearance when wider snow tracks were fitted. Some vehicles were also operated without the exhaust silencer. Although closely associated with the Eastern Front, the RSO was subsequently employed in other theaters as a transporter and artillery tractor, moving supplies, equipment and guns where wheeled vehicles could struggle.
Figure / Vehicle Details & Realism
Tamiya’s 35394 represents the later-production RSO/01 with the revised cab configuration and distinctive rounded bodywork. The compact suspension features four road wheels on each side, while the tracks are engineered as assembly-type parts with one-piece straight sections to simplify construction while preserving the characteristic tracked appearance.
The rear cargo platform offers two presentation options: it can be completed with the canvas cover installed or displayed with the supporting frame exposed. The cab includes transparent glazing, and Tamiya provides pre-cut masking stickers for the windows and frames to assist with painting. Mechanical components, including engine and drivetrain detail beneath the chassis, add further depth to the model. A seated driver figure is included to bring additional scale and character to the finished vehicle.
Diorama & Display Use
The RSO/01 is particularly suited to logistics and artillery dioramas rather than conventional armored combat scenes. An Eastern Front setting with muddy roads, deep snow, supply crates or a towed artillery piece reflects the vehicle’s original purpose especially well.
The later-production configuration also allows scenes set from 1943 onward in other areas where RSO tractors were employed. Its compact dimensions make it ideal for small dioramas, roadside scenes, supply columns, artillery positions or standalone displays where the unusual tracked chassis and rounded cab can remain clearly visible.
Material & Customization
This is an unassembled and unpainted 1/35 injection-molded plastic model kit. Transparent parts are provided for the cab glazing, together with pre-cut masking stickers for easier painting of the windows and frames. A driver figure and decals for two marking options are included. Glue and paint are required separately.
The RSO provides excellent opportunities for realistic weathering. Mud accumulation around the running gear, worn cargo-platform surfaces, dust, scratches and restrained chipping can emphasize its hard-working transport role. Winter finishes and snow effects are particularly appropriate for Eastern Front subjects, while cargo loads, tarpaulins and additional equipment can be added by the modeler to personalize a logistics scene.
Who It’s For
Tamiya 35394 is aimed at 1/35 military vehicle modelers, WWII historical modelers and diorama builders looking for a distinctive support vehicle beyond conventional tanks and armored vehicles. Its practical track engineering, included driver and flexible cargo-platform configuration also make it an attractive project for modelers interested in combining straightforward construction with detailed painting and weathering.
